Stiffneses:
From S to H you can decide wether getting a lot of power with a soft fin or getting a lot of control with a stiff one. For lighter wind you need softer and for stronger harder for more control.

Rakes
The rake measures the angle created between the fin and the bottom of the board. More rake for us means a straighter fin making 10 the maximum rake, almost straight angle with the board and rake 0 a normal rake from past years.

You can give more rake to the fins and this will get you more power and upwind angle. When the wind picks up you wanna get more control leaving the rake more to the back.

Profiles
Thicker foils give you more power, more angle and make you feel a little bit steadier feeling but you will loose top speed. Thinner foils give you a better top speed but you will loose power in the lighter air and angle.

We also move the thickest point forward for a smoother feeling and backwards for more speed oriented fins.

Area
More surface on fin makes them more powerful and less area makes them faster but less powerful. Having bigger tips and narrows bases gave us more control, and keeping skinny tips like in our slalom fins made us reach amazing speeds as Finians new world record.

Models

R13
The R13 is the easiest all around fin for racing. On light air this fin offers a nice lift and power, combined with an easy trimming feeling. On stronger winds this fin keeps always a nice control feeling, good angle on the upwind and a nice easy speed trim in the downwind.

R14
Based on the R13 we made the R14 for stronger wind or lighter people. We reduce the thickness and area of the fin decreasing the power and increasing the top speed. The result was a really controllable fin for stronger winds. Lighter people who preferred a faster feeling than a powerful feeling love this fin.

Concept of the new models
Boards started getting bigger in the tail this years so we felt we had to increase the power of our fins to match the new concept of boards. The sails became really stable as well with the double luff so we decided we could go for more power on the new models. We introduced this new generation of fins R16 and R17 that provide a lot of power, control and top speed as well.

New compromise of thickness area!!! Good upwind and fast downwind!

R16
Tying to get a more powerful fin we increased the area of the fin on the tip comparing to an R13. We find out that this gave us more power and angle but we lost top speed. So we decrease the thickness of the fin and made it almost as thin as an R14 giving us the top speed again. The result was really good as we had a really good powerful fin for middle winds and a completely new style comparing to the R13.

R17
Based on the really good performance of the R16 we wanted more power in the light air or even in stronger winds for powerful riders. We increased again the area in the tip of the fin and kept the same thickness as the R16. The results were instant as in the light air we could point more again without missing any top speed.

R18
Based on the development of the R17 this is a very powerful fin mostly for light wind conditions.

Jean Jacque Deboichet – From Past – Present



On a recent visit to Thailand, it was a great time to catch up with Jean Jacque Deboichet.

When did you start windsurfing?
Well, in the summer time I would go sailing we would normally sail through out the summer holidays.

One summer some friends and me decided to buy the windsurfer, the experience was great, and from the first time of being on the water I instantly fell in love with the sport.

When did you start shaping boards and fins?
We were on a trip to Lake Garda, we had heard it was always windy there. When we were there we met Randy Naish and Sigee Hoffman they were sailing boards that were fully planning it was incredible.

When we got back to Switzerland we bought everything we needed to start making a board ourselves. This was really exciting none of us had an idea but we managed to start shaping.

When did your focus shift on to designing Fins?
In 1996 boards were developing, materials were getting better and better and so were the shapes, in my opinion everyone was forgetting about the fin. This is the point when fin developing really took over my life.

I believed that twist, stress analysis, flex was very important and should be considered when developing fins. At the time many people thought I was crazy however I invested a lot of money into developing a machine that could test all the above. This lead me to more accurate tests and methods of production when designing the fins.

Autum 2001 – The brand Deboichet really started to pick up speed my team of riders started to grow and the guys were winning everything and all of them on Deboichet. This made me feel great, I was very confident that I was making good fins.

What are your plans for the future?
I think with the more recent development of SUP, it will really help the growth of windsurfing. It makes the sport more accessible for every one and it is great fun.

The next project I would really like to get involved with would be to do some paddle design something new and fresh that I am pretty sure I will get involved with.

Also a development of SUP fins for the big wave riders but im not sure.

The latest projects I have been working on is some wave fins that both Cyril Moussilimani and Antoine Albeau have both tested. It works great and is pretty cool, I am very happy with the fins.

C'est quoi le principe du petit aileron devant le grand ?

c'est un systeme qui sert à briser ou empecher la creation de la bulle d'air se creant à la base de ton aileron , cette bulle favorisant le spin out

C'est pas nouveau, Jimmy lewis (entre autre ) avait devellopé le concept sur les ailerons a fenetre, mais finalement c'etait pas au top, vu la trainée du bordel..

Deboichet a retravaillé l'esprit du truc, au vu de ses ailerons ca doit marcher....j'ai pas testé

La nouvelle gamme d'ailerons Dragon Line produits en Thaïlande est annoncée sur le site Deboichet mais sans information hormis une photo.

Je suis curieux de connaître la finalité de ces nouveaux ailerons de slalom (qualité de construction, public visé, prix et distribution) par rapport à la prodution française.
J'avais cru comprendre que la production en Thaïlande ne concernerait que les gammes vagues et freeride.

Interview Express J.J Deboichet par U-RIDE !



On ne présente plus les ailerons Deboichet, reconnu de part le monde pour la qualité de ses lames de slalom et race, Jean Jacques Deboichet a développé un savoir faire unique dans la fourniture de produits en micro série. Aujourd'hui c'est vers la Thaillande qu'il s'est tourné pour produire une nouvelle gamme d'ailerons de série et de pagaie de SUP intitulé Dragon Line. Jean Jacques nous en dit plus sur ses nouveaux produits!

UR : Jean Jacques peux tu nous en dire un peu sur la nouvelle collection "dragon line" que tu lances et les produits qui la composeront?

JJ : Notre nouvelle collection se compose d’une gamme d’ailerons de windsurf, la gamme sera composée d’ailerons de slalom, vague, anti-algues, freeride et pour la gamme de rames de SUP, elle sera composée de rames carbone et rames bois.

UR : Date officielle de sortie en shop?

JJ : La date de sortie des nouveaux produits est prévue dans quelques semaines, pour l’instant la vente se fait par le biais de notre site info@deboichetcustom.com. D’autres produits seront ajoutés.

UR : Pourquoi avoir choisi de te lancer dans la série alors que jusqu'à présent, tu proposais des produits assez élitistes avec les Deboichet Custom ?

JJ : Le fait d’être dans les produits élitistes est certainement un bon choix, mais la quantité de clients disposés à débourser cher n’est pas très importante et d’autre part, je n’ai proposé ces derniers 10 ans que des produits de formula et de slalom, donc en créant une nouvelle gamme, je peux ainsi réaliser une gamme d’ailerons complète et à un cout accessible tout en maintenant la qualité Deboichet.

UR : Tu proposes une gamme inédite de pagaies, c'est une diversification de tes activités, c'était une réelle envie d'aller vers ce nouveau support ou l'occasion de s'insérer sur ce nouveau marché au potentiel énorme?

JJ : Pour ce qui est des pagaies, c'est certainement le moyen de diversifier mes activités car cela fait plus de 30 ans que je travaille dans le domaine du Windsurf. En essayant/pratiquant le SUP qui m'a vraiment plu, je le pratique régulièrement, cela m'a donné envie de fabriquer des pagaies et je doit dire que la réalisation de pagaies en bois me fascine et me change du carbone et résine. En plus je suis persuadé que le SUP est un sport au gros potentiel, pas seulement comme sport de pointe mais un object pour la famille (cela me rappelle le début du windsurf ou chaque famille achetait une planche pour les vacances sur la plage)

UR : Comment seront placé les Dragon line en terme de prix public?

JJ : Pour le windsurf le prix se placera en milieux de gamme et pour les rames je ne prétends pas pour l’instant de réaliser des rames de compétitions mais d’offrir un beau et bon produit à mes futur clients, le prix sera certainement aussi attractif pour la qualité des produits fournis.

UR : Pourquoi avoir fait le choix de la Thailande pour la production?

JJ : J’ai choisi la Thaïlande car ayant déjà vécu et travaillé pour Cobra en 2002 et ayant de bons contacts proffessionnels et d'amitié avec Starboard cela m'a attiré de plus la qualité manuelles des Thai m’a impressionné lors de de mon séjour donc lorsque j’ai décidé d’ouvrir un nouvel atelier Deboichet la Thailande ma paru etre un très bon choix.

UR : Proposeras tu toujours les ailerons Deboichet Custom qui ont fait ta réputation et la demonstration de ton savoir faire reconnu de par le monde?

JJ : Bien sur la production des ailerons Deboichet Custom reste en France et je suis de près cette ligne qui me tient à coeur, le team qui produit mes ailerons est parfaitement au point (10 ans de production maintenant).
