"I'm currently using just one board; a Moo custom 40 wide, 4.6/5.0/5.5 Simmer SCR sails, one boom, a couple of K4fins and 12kgs of lead. The fins are 17 and 20 and were layed up in Carbon by Jon Kennet of Moo using the moulds I'd made myself. The 17 now stays in the board -I've found it gives me more than enough grip on the fast days, perhaps more than the 20 as it lets the board ride through the chop without tipping it about. It's only the square days when the 20's needed and a slightly more upright fin helps too."

Le CR de Jurjen van der Noord : "Special Speeds" on my iSonic Speed Special W44 and Reflex II 5.6

This new year started great with high speeds and some personal bests. On the night of the 2nd to the 3rd of January we drove from the north of Holland to West Kirby over Calais. Close to Liverpool (UK), we arrived at 9 AM right at the WK basin with the conditions looking very promising. The wind was around 30 to 40 knots and was increasing steadily over the course of the day. After a quick breakfast we rigged up and hit the water. I decided for my Starboard Speed Special W44 and my 2011 Severne Reflex II 5.6.

As soon as we started the other Dutch speedies immediately clocked some high speeds because they have been to West Kirby before and know how to sail fast at this spot. I had to get used to this spot, although after 5 runs my average speed was already 44.5 knots, which was a personal best. The course was flat but the angle was tight, around 120 degrees. Normally, 120 degrees isn't the fastest angle for speed - the fastest angle is broader at 130-140 degrees. So the choice was to stay behind the dam with a course of 120 degrees or bear off into the chop with 130-140 degrees. At first I chose to bear off, which resulted in some high peak speeds but not in the best speed runs (for GPSSS ranking, one speed run is the highest speed in 1 leg over 10 seconds). During the day my speeds increased and increased. I've started with an average (of 5 speed runs) of 44.5 knots, then 45,5 and 46 knots. With 46 knots I knew I was close to the other fast speedies. This gave me a big energy boost. I decided to change my strategy and stay close to the dam because the wind increased a lot and the chop was getting killer! Close to the dam the water stayed relative flat. In a big gust around 50 knots, I sheeted in and accelerated like a Ferrari to 49.1 knots (max speed) and achieved the highest run of the day at 47.14 knots.

Despite sailing with the biggest sail I was in full control all day long. The Severne Reflex-system gives the sail a huge range which was very convenient in these gusty conditions. All succeeding runs were faster.

After another hour my average speed was 46.52 knots and my energy was gone. I knew this was the highest speed achieved by a Dutchman and the highest speed made on the European continent. I was really stoked about that and rushed towards the car to connect my GPS to a computer and make sure that the speeds were correct... and they were. With these speeds, I effectively became the new 4th in the world ranking! Jacques van der Hout, who was also exhausted got really motivated by this result and somehow found some new energy. In the end he managed to get 1 or 2 good runs and beat me by 0.1 knot. With my result I’m second in the year ranking (so far) and 5th in the overall world ranking. A great day with amazing speeds!
