Barry (post 5) confirms, that they will also be sold as retrofit, to existing 170 to 230 cm booms:
I've already read it, that's why I asked M (our local ditributer) to have his feeling and news of the developpement / testing.
To my mind, this new boom's wide back end is a good idea to keep the sail's shape at downwind when releasing / triming outhoul.
With the old one, the main batten that crossing the boom always went in contact at the extrado profil.
"The TR8s are now available, tested today for the bigger sizes:
- fuller below the boom
- flatter in the mid-section
- more locked in
- super clean profile
- trademark soft feeling
The Mauisails team has delivered a very nice toy..."
The Windsurfing Shed
”I've had some good sessions on the TR-8s already and am very impressed.
They suit my boards very well and the comfort and speed is going to allow me to focus on the course, get a good start, pursue a tactically clean race, and finish ahead. "

Barry Spanier :
"the boom is basically the same. it's been many years since the graphic has changed and along the way we have been continuously improving small details. the adjustment clips have gone through a big evolution to prevent the corrosion that affected them (we finally had to chrome plate the 316SS pins!), and the clip bodies were made stronger as well. small adjustments to the layup and material specs were made for the 190, and for this year, there is a wide tail slalom version of the 170 (the tail piece retrofits both the 170 and 140). the new grip design is a 'statement' for 2012, and also has less pieces and a slightly harder character to improve durability.
so the boom is 'new' in a sense, but it is still the same old super strong, stiff, perfectly shaped one you might have known before."
"the new grip design will be for all booms manufactured in 2012 and beyond. it will probably take some months for them to work their way into the dealers, but the change has been made."
